Marcus Wolfe is a 27-year-old miner. After a laborious year of working, he one day finds himself mining side- by-side with his wife. When a heated argument erupts between the two of them, Marcus and Valentina discover that they are battling more than their emotions. Italian immigrants mining above let loose a stick of dynamite which blows their scaffolding to pieces. The couple must work through their differences, all the while fighting to escape. Their fear manifests in anger as they face fatigue, rockslides and treacherous gases. Finally, after Valentina admits her love loss - Marcus encounters an epiphany of his need and reliance on her. But all is too late when the Davy lamp signifies the growing presence of carbon monoxide in the air. In one last rush to save themselves, the pair look through a bag to find a gas mask - only, Valentina didn't pack it. Marcus grabs a stick of dynamite and feeds it into an opening. It’s quiet until Marcus crawls his way into a cave of jewels, his body seizing up from the poisonous gases. A garnet escapes his grip and he rolls over to see Valentina, the love of his life, breathing through the filter of a gas mask.
